The historic Rosenwald School built by the community in 1921, the Walnut Cove Colored School is an important location in the coal ash movement. The Town Council of Walnut Cove holds public meetings in the main classroom. The community spoke up against fracking, coal ash and in favor of annexation of the Walnut Tree in this building.
In honor of the 100th anniversary of the Walnut Cove Colored School, we produced a short documentary, which tells how Dorothy Dalton lead the restoration project of the first Rosenewald School, which became the model for future restorations across the country.
Here we unveiled the first piece of coal ash art - a decagon, symbolizing the strength of the community.
